Newton's First Law

Newton's First Law

Every object continues in a state of rest, or of motion in a straight line at constant speed, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces exerted upon it.

  • friction- the force that acts between materials that touch as they move past each other
  • volume- a measure of space
  • mass- the measure of the amount of material in an object and is the same in all locations
  • weight- depends on gravity, force of gravity is 10 m/s
  • mass and weight are proportional
  • newton (N)- SI unit of force
  • weight = mass X acceleration
  • net force- combination of all forces acting on an object's state of motion
